Remote Incremental Backup: This type backup entails only the objects modified since the time of the previous backup transmission and is typically saved daily at production server level. Archival Backup: This type backup is a full save of all data to a designated archive, whether the data has been modified or not.
If you need online assistance coordinating your backups, contact your Synergistic consultant to customize your 400RSM solution. Common issues our engineers assist clients with also include practical advise an guidance such as:
How copies of each backup tape should I retain?
How long should I keep a tape in the backup cycle before refreshing?
How often should I run a cleaning tape through my tape drives?
Here's some practical backup advice from some of our engineers:
1) Keep your tapes in a rotation with a set termination date
2) Verify your backups are successful, accurate, and complete
3) Store tapes in stable environment. Avoid dust and extreme temperature fluctuations.
4) Maintain drives by running timely cleaning tapes and procedures such as preventative maintenance as recommended by IBM.
5) Store tapes offsite. If you don't have a location, contact your Synergistic consultant to make arrangements at one of our data centers.
6) Check to insure backup software provides rights and access to a recovery server in a disaster scenario.
7) Know the fatality rate of tapes over time. Tapes, like everything else, are in a constant state of decay. Know statistically what percentage, therefore what number of your tapes will fail each year and plan accordingly.

In addition to this daily downtime, you probably experince annual downtimes due to upgrades and other planned events. For more information on this type of solution see our "High Availabilty" and "High Availability Hybrid" solutions.
